DEATH OF DU. MACADAM AND MADAME SARAH FLOWER.
By the overland mail we are in possession of a copy of tho " Press" of Monday the 4th instant, which contains the following telegraphic summary of news :—: — The Bluff, Sunday. 5 p.m. The Alhambra left Melbourne at 6 j\m on August 29. She arrived to-day at 11.30 a.m. The Hon. Dr. Macadam, who wa c a passenger for Dunedin, and wns suffering from nervous debility when he came on board, died on tho 2nd instant at 6 a.m. John Drummond Kirkland, Dr. Macadam's a-jsistaut, was also on boar' 1 . The Alharabra Failed at 4.30. Melbourne, August 29. David Young was executed at Castle maine, for the Daylesford murder, on the 21st August, denying to the last moment that he was the murderer. .lStheridge, the bank defaulter, had arrived from Auckland. It is understood that ho will plead guilty on Thursday, when his trial will take place at Geelong. It was stated in the police court that there were one hundred and twenty-five casess of embezzlement against him. The racehorse Illumination is dead. In the Assembly, Mr Snodgrass made a motion that the Governor do act independently of the Ministers in terminating the dead-lock. The motion was rejected by a large majority. A motion was subsequently carried that an address be presented to the Governor, asking him to take the measures deemed expedient by his Responsible Advisers. General Cameron sailed by the Jeddo. He was mot on landing by a guard of honor of the Royal Artillery at Sandridge, and a royal salute was fired at the Central Battery. The City Council also presented him .with a farewell address. Madame Sarah Flower, tho celebrated contralto, died on Sunday. Lieut. Vigors, mail guard on the Northern Railway, shot himself on Saturday last. The police have captured, after seven days' pursuit, at Tarn worth, the two bushrangers who stuck up Gimjera station. Mr Plunkett has been appointed Attor-ucy-Gonoral. The general news from Adelaide was unimportant. The Government had determined to recall Fmnis, leaving Manton the second in command, in charge of the Northern territory. Mr McKinlay was to report on tho whole country, and tho site for tho settlement was to be fixed in Adelaide, after the receipt of his report. Patrick Auld had been arrested in Adelaide, on warrant charged with murdering a black follow; ho was remanded for a week, and bailed out on the judge's ordor. The Devon flour mill had been destroyed by fire at Port Adelaido. News had been received from the Cape of Good Hope, via Sydney, by the yacht from London, up to July 8. 2500 Dasutos entered Bethulia and the Itcdersburg disti iot, intending to overrun it. 200 boers met them, and killed 1500 after three daye fighting, «nd retook all the cattle.
