MURDER.
We have hitherto had occasion to congratluate ourselves on the remarkable absence of serious felonies in our police reports, and hoped that the . evil day was far distant that would see the brand of Cain set upon the brow of any one of our community. It has however, at last become our painful duty to chronicle the first murder (of which we have any knowledge) that has been committed since the opening of the West Coast goldfields. Last night, about ten o'clock, we heard, as a rumour, that Thomas Ball, the. Hokitika milkman, had killed Absolom Brook, and given himself up to the authorities at tho Camp. On making further inquiries there we found the distressing intelligence was only too true. We can give no details of the murder further than the unfortunate men had been drinking, a quarrel ensued, and in a' hasty moment Brooks received a blow on the head that killed him. An inquest will be held on the body this-day, Tuesday, at ten o'clock, by the. Coroner, Dr. Beswick, when the circumstances that led to the committal of tho ciirae will fully transpire.
