PORT OF HOKITIKA SIGNALS.

1. Ball and red flag at the mast head . high water, take tbe bar. 3, Ball and blue flag, half mast : Half flood, wait for tide. When the bar may safely be attempted at half tide, whether flood or ebb, the red flag will be at the mast head over the ball, denoting the stato of tide. 8. Ball on the tower mast cap, and white flag : Ebb tide, bar dangerous. 4. No signal : Do not attempt the bar. 6. Red painted arm, pointed to the right-hand, entering from seaward : More to the south. 6. The other arm, pointed to the left hand, euteiing from seaward : Moro to the north. 7. Tho arms up aud down with the mast : As you go. When more than one vessel is crossing tho bar, tho foremost vessel will be piloted in, tbe others following in her wako. On a movable pole in front of the signal mast, the two in one showing the fairway, will bo hoisted (if necessary) to show the set of tho current on tho bar, thus :—: — A red and white pendant —to tho Northward ; A square yellow flag— lo the Southward. On the flagstaff not in use for the piloting signals, at high water the depth in feet on tbe bar will be denoted by Marryatt's code. A red light is hoisted on tho signal mast on the south spit each night, visible at from three to four miles. There will be an anchor and chain, and lino attached, on the South Spit, and boat and boat's crow in readiness at high water, every tide, to assist any vessel coming ovor tho bar. When tho bar is only fit for steamers to take, a red flag will be hoisted on the north flagstaff. When for sailing vessels, a red flag and ball. Masters of vessels are particularly repuested to attend to the small tidal flag on tbe spit, as the small tidal flag and the large flag in one takes them over the bar.
