Whoever passed it must havo been incoinpotont, and could not havo kept to tho contract. None of the committeo wero informed about, the,, passing of tho road, all- they~.know is that tho money was piid. Whothct whwis commonly called "tip" was mado use of I cannot xtndertako to say. Sly-grog Helling and robberios are overy day occurrences, the former being carried on lieicjto a most disgraceful extent, several so-called stores soiling more grog than any publican, and card-playing carried on under tho nose of tho polico and no notico taken; As a freak of justice I may mention that a party of miners, in giving notice of appeal, wero refused a copy of tho depositions in tho Warden's Court. I should wish to be informod whether it is compulsoty for a summons to bo Borved by a bailiff, I having been refused ono unless I paid 27s for it, and could not bo allowed to servo it mysolf, as it appoais tho bailiff ia paid by fec3 alone, tho Warden thinking it nnfair to rob him of such a God-send. I uudcrstand tho bailiff acts as a servant to tho Wardon without extra pay. 1 ' I remain, Your obedient servant, Inquirendo. .Wairaea, July 20, 1865. -♦ TO THE "EDITOR OF THE WEST COAST TIMEB. Sin,'— l am compelled by a sonso of justice to myself, as well as at tho request of a nnmbor of my friends and patiouta, who havo known mo for a number of years in tho Proviuco of Otago, to trespass upon your valuable spaco with reference to. the late inquest, as roportcd in yonr paper of tho 19th inst. With referonco to Dr. Ityley'sovidonco, in tho first place, I nolico tho Doctor's statement with regard to Bates' lifo being saved, if medical aid had been called in at an earlier stage of tho rupturo. This is correct ; but will tho Doctor assert that tho patient's lifo could bo saved 35 hours before ho died, as ho had alroady an inflammation which. obstructed tho bowola, and likewise tho passage of tho urino, and had been vomiting tureo days previous to mysolf been sent for. Dr. Ryley statos, on oath, that tho lotion in One of tho bottles, produced at tho inquest, contained spirits of turpontino, which, bo said, would aggravato the inflammation. At this st.igo tho Coroner, who is not a medical man, called tho Doctor and told him to smell' tho contents of tho bottle, and said he thought tio had made a mistake Tito Doctor then said, in a low tono, that ammonia would have tho same effect. 'Now, Sir, tho contents of this bottle in eimply a camphorated lotion, with a very small quantity of ammonia, which I applied to tho inflamed part of the stricturo, giving tho patient immediate enso. With rofcronco to tho contents of tho fellow bottlo produced, tho Doctor attiring this to bo a solution of mustard givon as an emetic, and would irritate tho inflammation, thoroby hastening death. This Btakment is at variance with tho truth. I totally dony that this bottle contained a solution of mustard, nor was it givoa as an emetic ; oo this portion of tho ovidenco is without foundation , Tho Doctor is again in orror by calling my pills aperiont pills, and states they would inorca^o tho inflammation. Those pills woro givon to assist tbo other medioino and roduoo the inflammation. In conclusion, Sir, I will leave tho public and yourself to judge of Dr. Rutherford Ryloy's medical skill when bo names ono of my medicines a solution of mustard, camphorated lotion spirits of turpontino, vegetable pills aporient pills. Surely his knowlodgo and medical skill must bo very limited, or either by Smell ortasto ho could at once detect the dilTorenco. „V?ltl| regard to Bivtes, my medicines wero adminis'<!org4 slfnply to act upon tho disorder, and not upon .(tW'-UiblteUtutiou, which they invariably do. A^ vWjeathejtflton'a I had given tho sanio modiuinos to li patiqnt suffering from inflammation >of the lungs, pfter. lfe?fjyr rfvou U|?._bv.Qtlw^^will!}2l-gsjl**ci**s^ and restored tliis man to his usual stato of lioalth in four duya, and can produce ovidouco to this effect in a, few hours' notico. I am, Sir, Yours, &o M Robert Westwood, Medical Horbaltat. July 21, 1805.
