WANGANUI SPEAKS TO COOK STRAIT FERRY HINEMOA BY RADIO TELEPHONE
An Innovation installed in the new Union Steam Company’s Cook Strait Ferry steamer Hinemoa, the radiotelephone, was used in direct communication with the "Chronicle” last night. A passenger, bound for the South Island, has occasion to speak to Wanganui, and, taking advantage of this new system, could be clearly heard by the recipient of the call. “The system was exactly like calling long distance on land," said the caller, "I had to wait for some considerable time, but there was no difficulty in getting through.” With the exception of a very slight humming In the ’phone, the reception was as good as that received in a call to any of the neighbouring districts of Wanganui. This call, is, so far as could be ascertained, the first in which the Hinemoa has been in direct contact with Wanganui by radio-tele-phone.
