FRUITGROWERS IN NELSON DISTRICT ASK FOR HIGHER PRICES

(P.A.) Nelson. March 4 At a representative meeting of fruitgrowers from the Nelson <T strict, held at Tasman, strong disapproval was expressed at the Government’s delay in replying to a request by he industry for an increased price for life current season's crop. The following resolution was adopted unanimously: “This meeting of Ne'son fruitgrowers is gravely dissatisfied with the faUurc of lhe Government to announce a satisfactory price s February 26, as promised by the Stabilisation Commission. The meeting demands, firstly, the withholding of any contemplated further issue of price orders on the present ridiculous basis: secondly, a minimum guarantee of nine shillings; thirdly, an adjustment, of price orders to a value relative to other products. ‘The increasing extent, to which fruit is being sold outside the marketing scheme is ample evidence that a price increase is warranted. The alarming proportions that the black market trade is assuming endangers the successful establishment of a permanent marketing organisation. In view of the above we ask that immediate action be taken.”

A provincial meeting of growers is to be called to discuss the question of suiting up a marketing scheme for the Nelson province.
