BURNT TO WATERLINE
LAUNCH IN DUNEDIN LEAKING PETROL THE CAUSE ( Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN. Feb. 28. The 30-foot launch Petrel, owned by Mr. A. M. Kinmont. was burnt to the waterline when an outbreak of fire, believed to have been caused by a leakage of petrol, enveloped the craft suddenly’. Mr. Kinmont and a companion were returning from Port Chalmers at about mid-day and when the launch was off Maia it took fire without warning. Although the petrol tank did not explode, there were about 15 gallons of fuel in it and this fed the flames so quickly that Mr. Kinmont had time only to turn the boat’s nose to the shore before the engine stopped. Both men escaped in a dinghy which was being towed behind the launch and managed to bring the burning craft into shallow water, where they endeavoured to hole her with an axe. but the flames were too fierce and they could not approach close enough. The launch was powered with a 10 h.p. Union engine and is now apparently a total loss.
