BULLET FROM THE DARK
UNKNOWN RIFLEMAN FIRES THROUGH WINDOW MAN’S NARROW ESCAPE I Pei Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 28. Fired apparently from a .22 calibre rifle, a bullet burst through the glass of a window of the front bedroom in the home of Reuben Richards, of Kohimarama, shortly after eight o’clock on Monday night, passing within inches of Richards, who was preparing for bed at the time of the incident. The bullet penetrated the double wall on the other side of the room and was recovered this morning from a cardboard box containing silk in the adjoining linen cupboard. Although the shot was heard by Richards he did not appreciate its significance until this morning. Although it is believed that the rifle was not fired at close range, the force with which the bullet entered the room tends to discount any theory that it could have been more than a few hundred yards away. After penetrating the window and curtain the bullet must have passed within several inches of Richards' head before »oing through the thickness of plaster wallboard and the fairly heavywooden lining of the linen cupboard.
