AZANA RESIGNS
SPANISHJ’RESIDENT CONSIDERS DEFEAT INEVITABLE DESIRE FOR PEACE (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 28. Senor Azana announced at Cou-langes-Sous-Saleve, France, that he has resigned the Presidency of Spain.
In a letter to the Cortes explaining his resignation, Senor Azana said he desired peace, and considered that defeat of the nationalist forces was inevitable, a view with which the majority of the Spanish people and the republican general staff ocncurred. He added that he had not resigned earlier be cause he believed it was still possible to negotiate, but the British and French recognition of General Franco rendered negotiathe republican general staff continuance as President useless. Senor Azana asked Senor Barrio to find the necessary successor as President. The Prime Minister, Dr. Juan Negrin, summoned a Cabinet meeting but did not disclose the locale.
Senor Del Vayo, republican Foreign Minister, arrived at Valencia from Paris and immediately conferred with Dr. Negrin.
