USE OF GAS

WANGANUI DISTRICT SALES FORGED AHEAD. "The first gas was supplied to Wanganui in 1879,” said the chairman of the Wanganui Corporation Gas Departmen;, Mr. G. E. Bennett, in opening the new holder at Castlacliff yesterday, "During the first year there were 109 consumers, and the cost of gas was 12s 6d a 1000 feet. The council took over the gasworks in 1902 and since then the department has forged ahead. Money from salesol this year will reach about £40,000, and when the sale of cookers, coke, and tar is included, the receipts will be about £60,000. The holder has a capacity of 50,000 cubic feet, and is a single lift spiral-guarded one constructed of puddled iron and steel tank.” The gas plant manufactured 150.000,000 to 160,000,000 cubic feet of gas, said Mr. Bennett. The material was prepared by Clayton, Son and Co., Leeds, and it was to the credit of British workmen that every part fitted exactly and not a bolt was out of place. Mr. Bennett complimented the contractors, E. Babbidge, Ltd.. Wellington, on the way they had carried out their part of the job.
