MILLING OF TIMBER

WORK ON AHU AHU BUSH HEAVY WAGONS WILL BE USED The milling ot 1000 acres of bush in the Ahu Ahu district has begun. It is estimated that there will be 10 years' cutting rights in the block of timber. Heavy, five-axled vehicles are to be used to cart the sawn timber from the mill to either Waverley or Wanganui. At a meeting yesterday the Waitotara County Council expressed concern at the damage such vehicles could cause to the road, and it is intended to ask the contractor to adhere to a timetable so as to protect other vehicular traffic on the road. The wagons will have eighteen wheels and the middle axle will permit of a necessary swing of front and rear portions to enable sharp corners to be negotiated.

The area of Jami in the locality where the bush is being felled is 2400 acres, half of it being in bush. It Is an education lease, and the timber in it consists of rimu, while pine, tawhero, tawa and rata. There is a small quantity of totara, but this is

being retained by the owner. Native birds are thriving in the bush. There are kiwis there, native pigeons, even the kaka can be seen. The rimu timber is reported to be of very good quality, the heart of lhe trees extending out almost to lhe bark.
