W.D.F.U.

MEETING AND FLOWER SHOW. WANGAEHU BRANCH. The Wangaehu branch of the W.D.F.U. held its flower show and the first meeting in this year on February 28. The president, Mrs. Mackintosh, presided over a large attendance. Those present were Mesdames Anderson, Allen, C. Baldwin, W. Baldwin, Connors, Grant, Honeyman, Holmes, Luff, Liggins, Langeson, Mercer, Alsen, O'Leary, Peffers, Richardson and the Misses Castle (2), Bignell (2), Baker and Miss Honeyman, also Mrs. Weekes, who very kindly judged the exhibits. The meeting opened with the reading of the Creed. A motion of sympathy was extended to those who have suffered bereavements, and members stood in silence. An apology for non-attendance was received from Mrs. Humphries. Letters of thanks were received from Mrs. Peffers and Mr. Cracroft, for the branch’s letters of sympathy in their recent sad bereavements. A letter of thanks was also received from the matron of the W.D. Rest Home for gifts of five pairs of bedroom towels. An invitation was received from the Fordell-Mangamahu branch to attend their garden party to be held on Saturday. March 4, at the residence of Mr. Wyley . The next meeting will be held on March 28, hostesses will be Mesdames Olsen, W. Baldwin and Mrs. Gravers. After a very dainty afternoon tea ■ served by the hostesses, Mrs. C. Baldwin and Misses Castles, Mrs. Weekes ■ gave a very instructive talk on the growing of roses, and charm and pom dahlias, defining the points of a show bloom. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her interesting talk and so kindly acting as judge, which was carried with acclamation. Mrs. Mercer arranged a competition which was won by Miss A. Castles, and Mrs. Holmes and Miss D. Castles tried for second place. There was quite a large number of entries in the various classes in the flower show, and the following were the prize winners:— Decorative dahlias (3): Mrs. W. Baldwin 1, Mrs. I. Grant 2, Mrs. C. Baldwin, v.h.c. Cactus dahlias (3): Mrs. W. Baldwin 1, Mrs. I. Grant 2. Charm dahlias (3): Mrs. W. Baldwin 1, Mrs. Grant 2. Pom dahlias (3): Mrs. W. Baldwin 1, Mrs. I. Grant 2. Zinnias (6): Mrs. Baldwin and Miss Baker 1 (equal). Zinnias, collection: Mrs. W. Baldwin 2. Collection of flowers, Mrs. Mackintosh 1, Miss Baker 2, Mrs. Baldwin v.h.c., Mrs. I Howey h.c. Mrs. Weekes congratulated [the branch on the large number of I entries and quality of the exhibits. TUKAKINA. The above branch held its first meeting for the year 1939, on Thursday, February 23. The president, Mrs. J. A. Harris presided and among those present were Mesdames J. A. Harris, R. M. Baldwin, Fitches (sec.), Major, Cater. Lumsden, Chapman, Collins, Low, C. Perry, J. Jones, Johnson. Misses E. Harris (England), B. Baldwin, B. Goile, M. Knox, M. Low. M. Cameron. Apologies were received from Mesdames W. Glasgow, Tew, Reynolds. Dowling. Morgan. Grice, Playle, Larkin, McLeay, Miss Quinillan. The meeting opened with the reading of the Creed, after which minutes of th last meting were confirmed. A new member, Miss Goile, was welcomed into the branch. The gift from the Turakina branch to “Kianga Moe” was an oak drawing room tabic. Mrs. Harris then read the speech, that she was able to broadcast, which j dealt with the new W.D. Rest Home, “Kianga Moe.” and the home-making course inaugurated at Massey College Palmerston North, which was attended by 30 girls from all parts of | New Zealand. Business of the day was then concluded. members adjourning for afternoon tea, after which they were con* ducted by Mr. Johnson on a tour of the Wangaehu Dairy Factory. On arrival they were met by Mr. Grant, factory manager, who very kindly showed members around,, and who, assisted by Mr. Johnson made things very clear as to th'e working of machinery, making and packing of the butter. At the conclusion of the afternoon a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Grant for their kindness. Next month, will members please note is the annual meeting and election of others. Mesdames Bradley and Wright. Mrs. Clare gave a demonstration of the making of lamp shades. The next meeting will be the annual meeting, when officers for the year will b? elected. The points competition is for I the prettiest wool tea cosy, and the 'cooking competition for four jam |tarts. Hostesses will be Mesdames ! Bradley and Wright, assisted by Mesdames J. McGrail and Hughes.
