RAETIHI NEWS

BABY COMPETITION (Own Correspondent.) The baby competition conducted at the Waimarino show on Saturday by the Plunket Society created marked interest among proud parents and others. Very satisfying entries were received and the competition was a decided success. The competition was part of the local Fitness Week celebrations and was intended to illustrate the principle that all physical fitness is ultimately attributable to proper care of infants. The following were the results:— Class I (babies up to six months): First, Lance Webb (son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Webb, Queen St., Raetihi). Class II (babies from six months to 12 months): First, Lorraine Wilson (Taupo). Class 111 (babies from 12 months to two years): Roger Davies (son of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Davies, Ameku Road, Raetihi) and David and Jonathan Gregg (twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Gregg, Ruatiti, Raetihi), all first equal.

TONGARIRO TRAMPING CLUB j ASCENT OF RUAPEHU With Ruapehu's summit as the objective 24 members of the club set out on Sunday. The route chosen was via the Chateau and Whakapapa and the foot of the glacier was reached at mid-day. Climbing conditions were distinctly good on the glacier, there being just sufficient soft snow to provide a good foothold whilst there was nothing in the nature of a crevasse for the whole distance. Round the Crater Lake there was much drifting fog and cloud but this did not prevent anyone in the party from getting a good view of the summit environs as the sun shone through quite brightly at intervals. A pleasing feature of the tramp was the meeting with a big party of Taihape Alpine Club members, this group doing the mountain as a wind-up to the Taihape physical Fitness Week. The return to the Chateau was made early and home was reached at 7.30 p.m.
