130 CARS HELD UP
ARGUMENT BETWEEN DRIVERS JAM ON NARROW BRIDGE f Per Press Association.! HASTINGS, Feb. 28. Following several minor traffic jams at Black Bridge, a long narrow bridge on the Haumoana-Hastings Road, a major hold-up occurred toward night when two lines of cars advancing from either end of the bridge, met in the middle without any hope of passing. Angry words between the drivers of the first cars ensured each refusing to back off the bridge, each demanding the right of way. In the meantime further cars kept piling up at the narrow approaches until more than 130 were involved in the jam, which resulted in many motorists being held up for more than an hour. The leader of one party stood firm on the argument that he had already backed off the bridge to let a stream of traffic through from the other end and he would not do so again, and this argument eventually prevailed. The opinion was freely expressed by waiting motorists that the authorities should arrange for the bridge to be patrolled by traffic inspectors at rush periods.
