FREAK ELECTRIC STORM

LONDON VICINITY ! BARRAGE BALLOONS DOWN IN FT. AMES. Received Feb. 27, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 27. A solitary flash of lightning during a thunderstorm struck the winch, ran up the steel cable, and brought down in flames one of the six balloons of the Stanmore barrage. The balloon fell on top of a hangar and damaged it, but nobody was injured. Another baloon came down similarly in flames between Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. Lightning ignited a building under construction at Hendon. It was a freak storm, following ten minutes of darkness. Temporary floods were caused.
