OBITUARY
MR. HIROSHI SAITO Received Feb. 27, 5.5 p.m. WASHINGTON, Feb. 26. The death has occurred of Mi. Hiroshi Saito, former Japanese Ambassador, as a result of tuberculosis. The late Mr. Hiroshi Saito, who was 53 years of age, occupied posts of increasing importance in the diplomatic service of Japan for nearly 30 years, culminating in his appointment as Japanese Ambassador to the United States of America, a post that he filled from 1934 to December last year. The greater part of his service abroad was spent in America, where he was first an attache to the Japanese Embassy at Washington in 1911. Apart from three years at the London Embassy from 1918 to 1921 and again from 1931 to 1932, and a short period in the Foreign Office at Tokio, he spent the greater part of his time in the United States, of which he was reputed to possess an intimate knowledge. He also represented Japan at various world disarmament and economic conferences and at the League of Nations. He was a distinguished scholar and the author of several books dealing with Japans place in international affairs.
