Sir,—About a fortnight ago the columns of your paper contained a report on the recruiting response in connection with the local Territorial Forces. That report certainly showed up the very poor response this district is making towards maintaining even a small military force for horn 4 defence purposes. Fancy only 70 to 8( men for the whole of this district. Is it that the parents and youths oi this fair land of ours firmly believi that never shall we he involved fin th< awful calamity of defending one oi the gems of countries? Surely not Then what is the reason? Is it toe much to hope that some more able pen than mine will take up the task ana point out where the reason and cause may be? I have waited for twe weeks to see if anyone would write.— I am etc., “WANGANUI-ITE ”
