THREE RECORDS BROKEN
WEST COAST ATHLETES
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING AT WANGANUI FINE HURDLES RACE BY DARBY More than 1000 spectators saw three records broken and outstanding performances recorded on Cook’s Gardens on Saturday afternoon and night, when the West Coast (N. 1. amateur athletic championships were decided in ideal conditions, Wanganui athletes w’ere in excellent form, new records being established by A. J. Darby in the 220 yards hurdles, P. Wallace in the 880 yards, and S. Nolan in the hammer throw. The points banner Was retained from Taranaki by 91 points to 83, Manawatu being third with 27. Narrowly beaten in the 120 yards low hurdles the veteran, Darby, was not to be denied in the 220 and led all the way to flash home in the record time of 27 2-ssec. He was again to the fore in the 440 yards hurdles, and after a great run finished in third place. The 880 yards was a highlight of the meeting, resulting in a spectacular duel between P. Wallace, of Wanganui, and L. W. Hannan, the promising New Plymouth half-miler. Uannan took the lead 300 yards from home, and running powerfully looked certain to win, until Wallace, with a brilliant sprint, headed him on the tape. The new record of Imin. 51 l-ssec., was fully 4-5 of a second ahead of last year’s time. The third record breaker, S. Nolan, of Wanganui, hurled the hammer 129 ft. Ilin., more than nine feet further than his 1938 predecessor. Winning the 100 yards in the excellent time of 10 l-*ssec., and the 220 yards in 24 l-ssec., R. Burbush, of Wanganui, proved himself one of New Zealand’s outstanding junior sprinters. Possessing a beautiful action, Burbush won both his events in convincing style.
The junior distances were also dominated by Wanganui, the 16-year-old Technical College student, R. Harris, scoring sterling wins in both the 880 yards and the mile. He won the 860 from the redoubtable Kozens, of Palmerston North, with a brilliant finishing burst, his time being 2min. 6 l-ssec. He won the mile comfortably in 4min. 39sec.
Perhaps the most spectacular race of the evening was the three miles, which was won by L. Hawthorne I (Kia Toa) in the last 50 yards, from IG. Bills (Wanganui). Setting a crack- | ing pace during the last two laps, I Bills secured a good lead on the rest, of the field, and entered the home stretch an apparently sure winner. However, an electrifying burst, of speed enabled Hawthorne to snatch the lead on the tape. The •time. 15min. 22sec., lowered last year’s figures by more than 20 seconds.
