ENGINE DRIVER DIES
REMAINED UNCONSCIOUS A WEEK ACCIDENT WHILE ON ENGINE (Own Correspondent) TAIHAPE, Feb. 25. Believed to have been struck by ai overhead bridge when he was up 01 the tender of his engine, about a milt north of Hunterville in the earl; hours of Saturday, February IS, th driver of a goods train, Mr. Alber Ernest Rowley, aged 36, of Taihape suffered injuries from which he diet in the Taihape Hospital at about '■ o’clock this morning. He did not re gain consciousness after being fount beside the railway track. He was : married man with two children, an< had been stationed at Taihape fo: the past four years. He had been r member of the local railway sial previously, having served here abou 14 years ago before being trans ferred to Woodville and then Whan garei. Mr. Rowley was a popula member of the staff, and was ths honorary secretary of the Taihapt Railway Tennis Club. He was prom mently identified with the activities of the E.F.C.A. and also took a keci interest in school affairs. He wa: born at Hukerunui, in the Whanga rei county. Deceased was admitted to the Taihape Hospital suffering from a frac tured skull and scalp wounds, Pneumonia supervened and he passer away exactly a week after the accident. An inquest was opened at Taihape this morning before the district coroner (Mr. E. Loader). Evidence oi identification was given by Thomas William West, a retired railway ganger residing at Woodville.
