NEW ZEALAND JOBS
TWO THOUSAND AUSTRALIANS APPLY. [ Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. “It is a pfttty good indication that the people of Australia are not prepared to accept the philosophy of those who say we are on the road to bankruptcy,” said the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, when his attention was drawn to a cable message from Sydney stating that 2000 building tradesmen there had already applied for employment in New Zealand. Mr. Savage said the Government was organising a plan by which men who came from Australia would be drafted to jobs immediately. A Sydney cable states that the Premier of New South Wales, Mr. B. S B. Stevens, told the Legislative Assembly that the loss of skilled tradesmen to New Zealand in large numbers was likely to create a difficult problem for builders in Sydney, as well as the Defence Department. He intends to discuss the matter with the New Zealand Government representative, M. J. Hodgens, M.P. for Palmerston North.
