BLACK-OUT AT SINGAPORE
DEFENCES BEING TESTED (Independent Cable Service.) Received Feb. 24, 11.35 p.m. SINGAPORE, Feb. 24. The settlement was blacked out yesterday night for the first time to test the defences against aerial attack. The manoeuvres are being repeated tonight. The blackouts are a prelude to combined naval and military manoeuvres to take place in March, in which 25 warships will participate. The British Government is spending £2,000.000 in strengthening defences in Malaya and Straits Settlements, and otherwise protecting Singapore’s back door.
