WAIMARINO COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING HELD (Own Correspondent •. RAETIHI, Feb. 23. The February meeting of the Wai marino County Council was presidecl over by Cr. D. J. Berry. The following were also present: Crs. Carter, Read, Scarrow, Solly, Wise, Mr. A. Mabbott (county clerk) and Mr. H. L. Hogg (engineer).
In reply to Ihe Commissioner ol Transport’s invitation to forwarc opinions re motor cyclists and roar safety, the council instructed the clerk to forward the following suggestions (1) That, their speed should be regulated; (2) that pillion-riding be prohibited; (3) that riding abreast b( prohibited as it was particularly dangerous on the tortuous roads fount in hilly country.
The 'Public Works Department forwarded information relative to bridge approaches and stating that with ihe general adoption of 24 feet, as a standard width for two-lane bridges, it may sometimes occur that will be erected on roads on which the present standard of construction is such that the formation width is the same or possibly less than that of the bridge itself. In such cases arrangements should be made to increase the formation and metalling at the bridge abutments, the metal to be taken out to the full width of Ihe bridge and should be gradually tapered off to the normal width at one chain distant.— The matter was referred to the engineer lor his attention.
C. L. Duigan and Co., Lid., wrote granting permission io take metal from a pit at the Matahiwi Bridge and, if necessary, the pit may be extended into their property under certain conditions—The matter was referred to the engineer for his inspection and report. The Taihape Borough Council forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Wellington Provincial Centennial Committee relative to the construction of a memorial on Petonc Beach. The quota sought from the county was £l9.—After discussion the council instructed the clerk to repiy that the council coula not see its way clear to contribute as the local memorial would require all the financial support the council could give.
Crighton Bros, applied for the issue of heavy traffic licenses and suggested that the licence fee payable be reduced by the sum payable each year until the amount paid to the council in connection with McDonnell’s Read is extinguished.—The clerk submitted the reply he had forwarded intimating that the council had no authority to do as suggested. The reply was approved by the council. The Rangitike! County Council advised that it had entered into a contract with R. T. Adamson, of Karioi, for metalling Upper Turakina Valley Road.
The Waimarino A.P.H. and I. Association enquired whether the council had any concrete pipes which could be used for the purpose of providing stock with water on the showgrounds and, if so, would it he prepared to donate same. —The clerk was asked to reply that in its opinion it would be better for the association to purchase the special type of concrete trougn made for the purpose and that the council would *iake a donation of £1 Is towards the purchase price. Mr. P. H. Wise (Huikumu) sought permission to lay a water pipe under
the Huikumu Road to convey water on to his property. —The council decided to grant the request subject to certain conditions. The Minister of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of the Order-in-Coun-cil abolishing the Rangataua Town Board District and adding the area to the county of Waimarino.
In consequence of the abolition oi the Rangataua Town Board District the clerk and engineer were authorised to proceed to Rangataua and investigate the affairs of the Town Board and make the necessary temporary arrangements in regard to the works in progress pending a review by the council. The engineer’s report, ranger’s report, and treasurer’s statement submitted were adopted and the pay sheet amounting to £2733 4s 6d was passed for payment.
