BADMINTON AT PATEA
PROPOSAL TO FORM CLUB (Ow n Correspondent) PATEA, Feb. 24. An excellent display of badminton was seen in the School Assembly Hall on Thursday, when Taranaki players defeated Wanganui by 5 matches to 2. The Mayor, Mr. E. I*. Hemingway, said they were making history in Patea, as it was the first time badminton had been introduced He only hoped a good strong club would result. He appreciated the sportsmanship and kindness of tne visitors in coming .such long distances to show Patea the game, and the town would be behind times il they did not form a club. Mr. Latham, vice-president of th? Taranaki Association, said Palea was the onlv place of any size in laranaki that did not have a badminton ciub. There were over 50 clubs in Taranaki, it being the second strongest association in New Zealand. Patea were fortunate in having Mi Richards, of the Customs Department, who had ben a former secretary of the New Zealand Association, and eras one of the best committee men in New' Zealand, and Taranaki would look forward to Patea s progress. The results were as follows, Taranaki players mentioned first: Ladies’ Doubles.—Misses K. O’Sullivan and D. McCarthy lost to_ Misses T. Greaves and M. Pawson, 15-18. Men’s Doubles. - - Spedding and Kemp beat A. Holroyd and R. Broad, 21-18. Ladies’ Singles. Miss McCarthy beat Miss Greaves. 15-13. Combined Doubles. —Miss O Sullivan and Reran beat Miss Pawson and Broad. 15-18: Miss McCarthy ana Spedding beat Miss Greaves and Hoiroyd, 21-9. , Men’s Singles.-Spedding beat rloiroyd, 15-3; Kemp lost to Broad, 12-15.
