HIGHLIGHT OF WANGANUI WEEK PROCESSION AND DISPLAY LAST NIGHT W?e h k" n, g wfn 1 ° £ .‘ Wsical Fitness weex m Wanganui took place las' wh h 1 h Vh< i n a processioil > interspersed with bands, paraded through Victoria Avenue and Guyton Street, to Cook's Gardens, where an appropriate programme was organised. rhe highland Pipe Band headed the parade and the Queen Alexandra’s Own and Wellington Regimental Bands were also on parade, the three Teoh ng t ?. n n ShOW ' The Wanganui Technical College cadets and sports teams were behind the Pipe Banti and Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, SeJ Scouts, Red Cross Society, St. John Ambulance, Wanganui Sword Club, pupils from various dancing schools and exhibits from various sports oodles, including the Ruapehu ski Club, made an imposing array. The combined Wanganui rowing clubs entered a striking exhibit, boats mounted on lorries and parades of rowers in their club blazers carrying oats The Wanganui Baseball Association and the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club also entered a line display and the girls of various basketball clubs made a pleasing
Au Illustrated Procession. The Girl Guides hit upon the appropriate idea ot stressing the various aids to, and handicaps of, good health. For instance, a placard was carried decrying the high-heeled shoe. Advice as to food ana general cleanliness was printed for all to read, one placard illustrating the importance of the wash-tub and the clothes line. The March Past. The march past on Cook's Gardens was one of the most impressive spectacles it is possible to see. Ail the ' preliminary work to ensure smoothness of organisation was p.uved weii worth while, all the units conforming to the general plan with precision. Tile programme was: Drum-major s display by the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band, march past, team games, chariot races and Flamborougu sword dance by Girl Guides, Highland dancing by Miss V. Healy's pupils, health and beauty exercises by Miss Matthews' pupils, tumbling display
by Y.M.C.A. juniors, one mile cyclo, display by Braemar School of Dancing (Miss M. Swann), display of fencing by Wanganui Sword Club, formation of human pyramids by Y.M.C.A. secondary classes, 120 yards race for Bruen Cup (by Wanganui Amateur Athletic Clu), bridge display by Boy Scouts, display of weight lifting by Wanganui Health and Strength club, display of grace and rhythm by Y.M.C.A., baseball display by Wanganui Baseball Association, mile flat race by Wanganui Amateur Athletic Club, and three-mile cycle race by members of the same club.
A loud speaker equipment, loaned for the occasion by Mr. K. Lambert, greatly helped the promoters in that the public could be kept informed of the various events. Mr. I. Brown, of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was the announcer. Patrol L. Dowling and the patrol car of the Automobile Association, Wanganui, also rendered great service, assisting with the procession and the marshalling of the parade. Colonel 1-. K. Turnbull, assisted by members of the New Zealand Legion of Frontiersmen, marshalled the parade and was in charge of the. march past. The British Corps of Frontiersmen ,in charge of Colonel W. S. McCrorie, were on duty at Cook’s Gardens. To-day: Primary schools' day. Demonstration at various schools. To-morrow: Second day of race meeting, West Coast (N. 1. amateur athletic and cycling championships, bridge-to-bridge swimming race, primary school district swimming championships at Durie Hiil, end of Learn-to-Swim campaign. "Robin Hood." One of the most striking exhibits in the procession last night was the display to illustrate the romance and adventure of Robin Hood. This was entered by the Majestic Theatre and was favourably commented upon.
