OBITUARY
mrs. c. J. McCarthy. The funeral was held at the old Wanganui Catholic cemetery yesterday of Mrs. C. J. McCarthy, Wilson Street, Wanganui, whose death occurred after a short illness. Born in Melbourne 76 years ago, Mrs. McCarthy was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. C. Gasquoine. She • came to New Zealand with her parents in 1880 and lived in Greymouth. In 1886 she married Mr. C. J. McCarthy, in Greymouth, and later lived in Dunedin, where her husband was employed in the New Zealand Railways. On her husband leaving the rail-
way service, they lived in Wellington, where Mr. McCarthy took over the Royal Hotel. Later they took over the Railway Hotel in Otaki, and came to Wanganui in 1892, taking over the licence of the Rutland Hotel. In 1896 Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy returned to Wellington, going to the Britannia Hotel.
The following year they returned to Wanganui, taking over the Family Hotel, which in later years became known as McCarthy's Hotel. It is now the Station Hotel. They retired from business in 1923, living in retirement in Wanganui.
In her younger days, Mrs. McCarthy took a prominent part in the activities of St. Mary's Catholic parish, being a valued member of several Catholic parish, being a valued member of several Catholic societies, including the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
She was predeceased by her husband, who died 13 years ago, and her eldest son, Charles. She is survived
by three sons, Messrs. E. W. and L. P. McCarthy (Wanganui), and B. F. McCarthy (New South Wales). A sister, Mrs. W. Gleeson, lives at Lower Hutt (Wellington).
