SWIMMING CARNIVAL AT MARTON
RECORD ATTENDANCE WEDNESDAY’S SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMME (Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Feb. 22. The weather was all that could be desired for the Marton swimming carnival on Wednesday evening, and an indication of the enthusiasm with which the function had been organised by the Wanganui Swimming Centre and supported by Marton enthusiasts may be gathered from the fact that seating capacity at the Marton baths was taxed to the utmost. A unique feature was that no trophies or prizes were distributed for the carnival, everything being done gratis.
The War»anui Centre controlled the carnival, and the following were the officials:—Referee, Mr. J. B. Cotterill; starter, Mr. A. Gurney; assistant starter, Mr. C. Breed; swimming judges, Messrs. R. Harrison, P. Smith and J. Heald; timekeepers, Messrs. K. Broughton and M. Breed; call stewards, Mrs. Bonner and Mr. R. Grace; chaperone, Mrs. Bonner; records, Mrs. T. Anderson; handicapper, Mr. H. Tyler; announcer, Mr. C. Thrush; secretary, Mr. F. W. Bridges. Mr. F. Purnell, Mayor of Marton, welcomed the visitors and referred to the splendid services rendered by Messrs. J. B. Cotterill, M.P.,.and C. A. Palmer in arranging the carnival. He hoped that the carnival would be the means of stimulating interest in swimming in Marton. Mr. J. B. Cotterill stated that the object of the centre was to revive the Marton Club, which at one time was a very strong organisation. The carnival was part of the Physical Fitness Week and there was no more healthy sport than swimming. The patronage of the public that evening showed that there was a keen interesl being taken in the sport and he sincerely hoped that their efforts would be rewarded by seeing the Marton Club once more an active body. Mr. Cotterill called upon Mr. F. Purnell (Mayor) and Cr. W. J. Mogridge to officially open the carnival by swiming a length of the baths. "Messrs. Purnell and Mogridge responded by diving in fully clothed and swimming 25 yards.
