TROPHIES PRESENTED

WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB FUNCTION PRESIDENT CONGRATULATES OWNERS. A double presentation ceremony took place yesterday afternoon after the race for the Wanganui Cup, the trophy provided for the winner of this race being presented to the successful owner, and the trophy for the Juvenile Handicap also being handed over. The trophy for the Wanganui Cup was a gold cup valued at £5O, presented by Mr. T. Currie, a member of the club for a lengthy period, who has seen some fifty contests for the Wanganui Cup. The first race for this long-distance handicap seen by Mr. Currie was that won by Dudu in 1888. Two years later Dudu repeated the victory, and capped this with a third success the following year.

Messrs. James Buchanan and Co., through their New Zealand representative, provided the trophy for the Juvenile Handicap, this being a handsome tea and coffee service, valued at £25.

Addressing patrons through the medium of the loud-speaker service immediately after the Cup race, the president of the Wanganui Jockey Club, Mr. H. M. Speed, acknowledged the generosity of the donors of the trophies and paid a tribute to the keen interest which Mr. T. Currie had always displayed in the affairs of the club. Mr. Speed also congratulated the owner of the Cup winner (Siegmund), Mr. F. Kettlewell, of Palmerston North, and the owner of the Juvenile Handicap winner (Varimond). Mr. M. Millar, also of Palmerston North. He called on Mrs. Speed to present the cup to Mr. Kettlewell, and Mrs. Russell Grace, wife of the vice-president, to present the tea and coffee service to Mr. Millar, after which cheers for the connections of the two winners were heartily given.
