TRIUMPH FOR STAYER

AMIGO CAPTURES SPRINT AUSPICIOUS OPENING FOR AUTUMN MEETING WELL-BACKED WINNERS SUCCESSFUL Baek to his best form, the Siegfried gelding Siegmund yesterday won the Wanganui Cup in convincing style, going to the front five furlongs from home and holding off all challenges to win narrowly but convincingly. Me was favourite for this long-distance race, now run over one mile four and a-quarter furlongs, and his victory for the Palmerston North owner, Mr. F. Kettlewell, was very popular. This was the principal event on the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, favoured with fine weather, a large crowd and keen' contests. The fixture will be concluded to-morrow.

Fourteen months ago Siegmund came into prominence by winning three evnts in succession —the Grandstand Handicap (nine furlongs), the Himatangi Handicap (nine furlongs) and the Liverpool Handicap (11 miles). Later, at the Wellington meetings the Siegfried gelding won the Summer Handicap (11 miles) after having been fourth in the Wellington Cup. Thus it was not surprising, after his win at Woodville on Saturday, that Siegmund was installed favourite yesterday, and he showed gameness in pulling his backers through. The race for the cup had some surprising features, and in spite of the fact that the original field of twelve acceptors dwindled down to nine with the course defection of Winsome Lu, the contest was certainly not lacking in interest. This is the first occasion in the Wanganui Cup's history of over 60 years that it has been decided over twelve and a-quarter furlongs. Over the early stages the rield was rather bunched, with nothing willing to make the pace, and two mediumstayers like Brazen King and The Bigot were left in front. The pace was on over the last mile, and Siegmund ran into the lead five furlongs from home, being clear over the concluding half-mile. It was not till the last half-furlong was entered on that any serious challenge was thrown out, and in the last few strides Tiger Gain, finishing very fast, got to within half a head of the winner. Tiger Gain is classed as an aged horse, and as he is rising ten his was a very creditable feat.

I an easy win in the Westmere Hack ■ Hurdles, for which she was a wellbacked third favourite. She led all the way to win well from Red Rufus, who beat the favourite pair, Entheos and Hanover. The Tayforth Hack Handicap re-

sulted in a mild surprise, the winner I being Te Hula, who had not won I since he scored in the Farewell Hack Handicap at the Wanganui June meeting nearly two years ago. White I Gold, a hot favourite, attempted to I lead all the way but failed badly.

' Ecstatic continued her winning way I when she defeated a useful field in I the Petre Hack Handicap, with Pretty | Lass her nearest attendant when the | judge was reached. Trebor was a [ good third, with Amoroso and Red Cat | next to finish.

I With the “gate" showing that there I was an increased attendance, and fine I weather and the- success of wellbacked winners, the totalisator showed an increase of £1865 over last I year's total of £16,401, the turnover I being £18,266. Two actual favourites I won, and three favourites returned | dividends for second places. There i was no large dividend throughout the I day. the longest price being well short of double figures. Lady Stella All the Way. Hanover was favourite for the Westmere Hack Hurdles, with Entheos carrying just a little mere than the eventual winner, Lady Stella.

Lady Stella jumped out smartlj and led Doctor Defoe over the firs j fence, with Hanover, Red Rufus am Entheos following. Past the stand; the first time Lady Stella was si? lengths in front of Hanover, witl Red Rufus a length away and Doctor Defoe, running wide, well cleai of Entheos. Down the back Ladj Stella was bowling along nicely ii front, and following her at lour length intervals across the top wen I Hanover, Red Rufus and Entheos (Red Rufus ran past Hanover on the home turn but Lady Stella held on tc win by two lengths from Red Rufus Six lengths back was Entheos, will 'Hanover three lengths further back Limond Filly Wins. ! La Bru was backed down to a short .price for the Juvenile Handicap, bu at the finish the favourite went under by the narrowest of margins t< the Limond filly Varimond. Allez delayed the start consider ably and then spoilt the chances o Pearl of Asia when the barrier went up. La Bru, Military Maid, Allez Lord Midas and Varimond led ou from the tapes, with Submission next Entering the straight Military Mail and La Bru were ahead of Allez Submission (wide out) and Varimond In the run to the judge Varimoni challenged La Bru ana won by hal. a head, with Submission a length am a-half away. Allez was fourth am then came Lord Midas, Royal Hunt , ress, Veldette and Lady Drake.

Parquet was another to challenge the leader in the last hundred yards, and actually only half a length separated the place-getters at the finish. the Limond mare coming from well back to run third. As Siegmund is out of a Limond mare the result must be accepted as vindication of the claim that Koatanui-bred mares exert a wonderful influence on the turf. Brazen King, last year’s winner, had to do most of the early pace-making, which was all against his chances as he generally runs his best race when reserved for a devastating challenge. He finished fourth, but there were a couple of lengths of daylight between him and the placed trio. The Bigot, who was pulling double passing the stands the first time and must have given B. H. Morris an uncomfortable

ride, was fifth, but several lengths behind the fourth horse. Entail might

have done better if he had been taken to the front, but he is inclined to hang out and may have been hampered by this tendency. Taitoru. who was started after all because it was thought he would stay on well, was well back at the finish, but Wotan and Rustem were still further back. Private watches made the final mile of the Cup race lmin. 42sec. and the last half-mile 50sec, and as this

time could be vouched for it might appear as if the first stages—four and a-quarter furlongs—were covered in lmin. 17sec., for the official time was 2min. 59sec. Unless there was

a clerical error and the correct time was 2.39, as was made by private watches, one must assume that Lady Stella, in the hurdle race, covered the same distance and jumped six

Finacce at Last. | Le Marquis and Fiancee, the favourites in the Kai Iwi Maiden, finished in the reverse order. i Fiancee, Little Dorrit, March Easy and Le Marquis were first out, but at I the end of "a furlong Fiancee had 'been displaced by The Smiler, and I crossing the too 'the Smiler just led I from Fiancee, Le Marquis, Little I Dorrit and Darthura, with Ruling I Star .making up ground from the real. ' Fiancee got through on the rails I when The Smiler ran wide at the ' turn, and Little Dorrit and Ruling I Star followed the leaders into li.e ' straight. Fiancee stuck on to win i by a length, with Le Marquis three- ! quarters of a length in front of Little ' Dorrit. Ruling Star was only a head 'away, and there was a big gap back Ito Darthura, The Smiler and March Easy. Three in Line. . Dark Eagle and Mataroa carried ■ most money in, the Victory Hack Handicap, but in a great finish the I judge was unable to separate Red | Witch and Morning Flight, with , Mataroa almost in line. | Red Witch, Dark Eagle and Ama- ' lory were first to show out, and past 'the’ stands the first time Red Witch I was leading Amatory, Dark Eagle. ' Karerenui, Mataroa, Golden Orchid and Resinguard. Dark Eagle dashed , into the lead running for the si? furlongs but was displaced by Red i Witch a furlong further on. At the ' half-mile Red Witch, Dark Eagle and I Amatory (wide out) were ahead ol Mataroa. Amatory ran up to the leaders on the turn and led into tnc straight from Dark Eagle, Red Witch, ; Karerenui, Mataroa and Morning Flight. Amatory was overhauled 10U yards from the post and in a ate finish Red Witch and Morning Flight dead-heated, with Mataroa only half a head away. Two lengths back was Amatory, with Dark EagL, Golden Orchid and Karerenui next.

obstacles, and yet the time registered in that event was 2.51. eight seconds faster than that hoisted after the cup race. Amigo’s Sprint Success. After the good form Amigo showed during the holiday racing six or seven weeks ago, it was expected that the Beau Pere gelding would play a prominent part in the Flying Handicap, and it was not surprising to find him holding Laughing Lass at bay when the judge was reached. The time registered, lmin. 12 4-ssec. for the six furlongs, was an indication of the state of the track, which was very fast. Laughing Lass just failed to repeat her victory of last year, and Notium was third. The distance hack event, the Victory Hack Handicap, resulted in a slashing finish, three horses flashing past the judge in line, with their apprentice riders “working overtime.” When the numbers were hoisted it was not surprising to find that the judge was unable to separate Red Witch and Morning Flight, with Mataroa only half a head away. The Juvenile Handicap, for which a trophy had been provided, also resulted in a stirring finish, the favourite. La Bru, just failing by the narrowest of margins to hold off Varlmond, much to the apparent surprise of the rider La Bru. Submission was third and Allez fourth. The lastnamed delayed the start considerably and when they were let go appeared to jump across in front of Pearl of Asia. Lady Stella, trained by that astute judge of jumpers, Verne Colello, had

Favourite Wins the Cup. Siegmund was favourite for the Wanganui Cup, but at a good price as several others were well supported. The Bigot and Brazen King were first to show out and passing the stands Brazen King was leading from The Bigot, Rustem, Entail, Siegmund. Taitoru and Tiger Gain, with Wotan and Parquet next. The order of the leaders was much the same at the six furlongs, but Siegmund ran up fast and actually headed The Bigot and Brazen King at the five furlongs, with Rustem, Tiger Gain and Taitoru next. Tiger Gain improved his position crossing the top, but Sigmund turned for home ahead of The Bigot, Brazen King and Tiger Gain. There was a great race to the judge, and Tiger Gain just failed by half a head to catch Siegmund. Parquet was only a neck away, third, and there was a gap of two lengths back to Brazen King. The Bigot was eight lengths away fifth, and then came Entail, Taitoru, with Wotan and Rustem last. Te Huia Surprises. White Gold was backed as unbeatable in the Tayforth Hack Handicap but Te Huia brought about the undoing of the “good thing.” After some delay at the tapes they got away well, White Gold soon taking the lead and being followed by Joe Louis, Haile Selassie, Te Huia and War Lap. Lady Hoariri then dashed up to join the leader, only to drop back again, and past the halfmile Te Huia was White Gold's nearest attendant, with War Lap and Joe Louis next. White Gold turned for home three lengths ahead of Te Huia, War Lap and Joe Louis, but over the final stages White Gold turned it in and Te Huia won by three lengths. War Lap was four lengths behind the favourite, and then came Joe Louis and Haile Selassie. Consistent Ecstatic. Ecstatic was backed down to nearly even money in the Petre Hack Handicap, with Pretty Lass at a decent price, and the pair paid the dividends. Ecstatic was smartest out from the barrier but was displaced at the end of a furlong by Gold Petal, with Amoroso, Red Cat and Pretty Lass next. Gold Petal led Ecstatic by three lengths at the three furlong but Ecstatic again went to the front on the home turn, Gold Petal dropping back, Pretty Lass challenged in the run home but Ecstatic won by a short length. Trebor was two lengths back, third, and then came Amoroso with Red Cat and Goid Petal close up. Easy for Amigo. Laughing Lass was better backed than Amigo in the concluding event, but the three-year-oid won well. Amigo showed out first but was soon steadied and Life Guard ran to the front from Sporting Gift, Laughing Lass and Amigo. This was the order past the half-mile, but Amigo commenced to move up and Laughing Lass also went up to the leader. Amigo was actually first to straighten up for the run to the judge, and he

held off Laughing Lass’ challenge tc win by three-quarters of a length Notium was a length and a-half behind the favourite, and Life Guare was fourth.
