WON BY ASHBURTON BAND CONTEST RESULTS [ Per Preu Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 22. With a margin of 21 points in the aggregate, Ashburton Silver Band won the B grade championship, of which the second test was played this evening at the Dominion band contest. “I must congratulate the winning band on its performance in both test selections,” said the judge. Captain H. R. Shugg. “Its playing was quite outstanding and I do not hesitate to say that it should be a B grade no longer.” He complimented all the f. grade bands on their playing. Enthusiastic praise was lavished bi the judge, Mr. James Dixon, on the competitors i.t the Eh or EEh bass solo section in the New Zealanc Championship Band Contest to-day The test piece was “In the Deep. Deep Depths” (Ord. Hume). “We have heard a great section today.” said Mr. Dixon. “Many people despise the old monster bass, hut I got a real treat out of this contest. I was a magnificent test and thre wzu ample opportunity for interpretation The winner (E. Withell) gave a mag nificent performance. H. C. Unwin who is placed second, had the biggesi tone of all. but he had faults I coulc not overlook. At the same time he h a magnificent h-ss player. “The standard among some of th< remaining players was so high that 1 have done an unusual thing in placing four of them equal in third place All four were very good and there was nothing to choose among them.’ The placing werq: E. The test piece was Serenata (Jenkins) and the judge remarked on the low standard of playing. “I was astonished at the lack of interpretation,” he said. B Flat Cornet Championship In the B. flat cornet championship four competitors were recalled for the final. They were: V. Aldridge (Woolston Brass), I. Bassett (Green Island Municipal', W. Stevenson (Woolston Brass), and R. Simpson (Christchurch Municipal). Neither placings nor points were announced. The next in order were J. A. Storrie (Invercargill Civic) 89, J.
