TEMPERANCE UNION
WANGANUI EAST BRANCH The Wanganui East branch of the W.C.T.U. held its first meeting for the year on February 9 in St. Alban's Hall. Mrs. Young led the devotions, giving a very helpful address. Jones assisted by playing the piano. All were sorry to learn of Mrs. Andrews' continued indisposition. Mrs. Bloor (treasurer) gave a report on the financial position of the union. Several accounts were passed for payment. Mrs. Day' thanked Mrs. Bloor for her consistent work during the year 1938. It was moved by the union that letters of appreciation be sent to Mr. Francis Brown and Mr. Andrews for their practical help given to the union.
The Temperance Fact was read by Miss Wallace: Drink is a dope. The direct effect of alcohol upon the nervous system is in all stages and upon all parts of the system to depress and suspend its function. It is, in short, from first to last, a narcotic drug. Francis Willard Day was observed. Mrs. Ogier read a paper dealing with some of her early work. Mrs. Ogier was re-elected as evangelistic superintendent for the union. Mrs. Bloor was appointed as delegate to the convention to be held in Wellington in March. Mention was made of tne women's day of prayer to be held on February 24 in All Saints’ Church, the Wanganui East session to be led by Captain Cobb.
The Band of Hope will open on February 28 at 7 p.m.
The new syllabus, which Mr. Andrews typed for the union, was handed round to all members. Mrs. Dabinette and Miss Christie were hostesses. A very helpful and happy meeting was brought to a close by prayer and Benediction.
