Reform in the hotel licensing laws nt tne Dominion, with the object, not of bringing about an increase in the number of “drinking dens.'' but in order that better residential accommodation might be provided in the light of modern requirements for the travelling public, was urged by a meeting of the Hastings Chamber ol Commerce. Although members expressed ful sympathy with the representation! made by the Southland Progress League for revision of the licensing laws it is considered that the question was one of national policy anc should be placed before the Associat cd Chambers for consideration. However, emphasis was laid on the fact that the meeting was of the opinior that any steps taken should be in th< direction of enlisting the co-operatior of leaders of lhe churches and th« New Zealand Alliance.
