INTOXICATED DRIVER
SPEEDING AT PUTIKI WELLINGTON MAN FINED For being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car al Putiki on January 28, George Love was fined £2O, with costs 10s, and doctor’s expenses £1 Is, by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Wanganui Magistrate's Court yesterday. “1 will not cancel his licence otherwise he might lose his employment,” said Mr. Salmon. Love is in charge of a motor hire business in Wellington. Sergeant R. J. F. Whiting, vvhc conducted the case for the police said that Traffic Inspector D. Burdett was standing on the main highway at Putiki on January 28 when he heard a motor-car travelling at a high rate of speed, estimated to be between b< and 70 miles an hour. There was a large amount of traffic in the locality at the time and Love’s car was seen to swerve violently. The inspector followed the car and Love was brought back to Wanganui police station. At the time he was examined the doctor said that he may have been fit to drive. Mr. V. B. Willis, for Love, said that Love was not in the habit of. taking liquor. He had driven to Wanganui for a week-end visit and i had taken some liquor before his return to Wellington. He was permitted shortly after being apprehended to drive the car back to Wellington, so it was not a bad case of intoxication. Counsel asked that the licence be not cancelled because oi. the nature of Love’s employment.
