CHILDREN’S GARDENING CIRCLE

WESTMERE-BRUNSWICK BRANCH Last Saturday afternoon members and their friends gathered at the garden of Mrs. J. Brownlie, Brunswick. Everyone admired the lovely garden and later when the children wore allowed to choose anything they fancied for their floating bowls a marvellous variety, of dainty flowers were displayed. Particularly noticeable were the lovely bushes of bronze caleolarias. These were arranged with all manner of toning flowers in golds and reds and contrasted strongly with the dainty pink and blue arrangements of delphiniums and hydrangeas. A lavender and violet bowl was much admired and so too was one of pink with mauve wallflowers in the centre. Mrs. Shanks demonstrated the art of arranging the bowls and was well pleased with the resulting efforts. She had a task indeed to separate the winners.

From the flowers brought for the hospital there were arranged some lovely bunches and Mrs. Brownlie gave roots of good iris as prizes. Each child present received a gift of seeds. The list of competition winners is as follows:—Floating bowls, senior girls, Noeline Morgan 1, N. Brownlie 2, Y. Anderson 3. Junior girls, Ray Preston 1. Senior boys, N. Blennerhassett 1, N. Jannings 2. Junior boys, D. Brownlie 1, R. Frost 2, D. Norrie 3. Under 8, Rex Preston 1, P. Leslie 2. Bunches, B. Dowsett 1, N. Brownlie 2; under 10, Uncle Wai 1, Ray Preston 2. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn and Uncle Wai was called on to hand the children their prizes. He was later seen conducting a lolly scramble, with, needless to say, a swarm of children around him.

Everyone was pleased to have Mr. Cox present, for the afternoon. A C.G.C. afternoon is never quite complete without its hard-working organiser. In a brief address Mr. Cox expressed the thanks of the C.G.C. to Mrs. Brownlie for arranging such a pleasant afternoon. An appeal was made by the organiser to those present to become associated members, and 15 adults expressed their admiration for the movement by becoming associated members.
