England v. South Africa at Johannesburg I HUTTON’S SPLENDID KNOCK GRIEVESON’S FINE DISPLAY BEHIND WICKETS ’By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] Received Feb. 19, 7.5 p.m. JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 18. Hammond won the toss in the fourth Test match between England and South Africa. He has not lost it once against Australia or South Africa. The wicket was not affected by rain, which caused a brief delay, when England had lost one for 14. Gibb lost his wicket through edging a rising ball from Langton into the slips Newson, South Africa’s new fast-medium bowler, troubled Paynter, who had a narrow escape in the slips. There was a second delay owing to rain 33 minutes after the start of play. On resuming Newson snapped up two smart catches. Hutton reached an unruffled halfcentury and completed 1000 runs on the tour. Ames started by crashing three overpitched bails from Langton through the covers, but fell to a grand off-break. After the tea adjournment Hutton hit freely till he mistimed a big offbreak. He batted 202 minutes without giving a chance. The light was becoming poor and the English bat-
