FLAG SET ON FIRE PASSENGER ON MARIPOSA APOLOGISES A LONDON LANDOWNER [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] (Independent Cable Service.) Received Feb. 17, 5.5 p.m. HONOLULU, Feb. 16. A formal protest was lodged to-day with the United States Government by officers and members of the crew of the Mariposa. It is revealed that a round-trip passenger, Mr. G. Annesley, at a function on board the ship last night, deliberately set fire to an American flag. The crew protested to the captain, and thereupon Mr. Annesley was confined to his stateroom. Australian and New Zealand passengers apologised to the captain, and Mr. Annesley to-day himself apologised to the captain. Mr. Annesley is of Irish extraction and resides in London. His occupation is given as landowner.
