"PUBLIC ENEMY 1 NO. 1”
VICTIMISED TAXI-DRIVERS [ Per Press Association. I CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 16. Alleged to have victimised four taxi-drivers to a total extent of £1 17s 6d, Edward Dardanelle de Malmanche appeared before Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. He pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant J. Sinclair said that de Malmanche had hired taxis, giving false names and addresses. “Among taxi-drivers,” said Detective Sinclair, “he is in the American parlance ‘public enemy No. I.’” De Malmanche was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour, to be followed by 18 months’ reformative detention.
