ON HAWERA TRACKS

CANDIDATES FOR WANGANUI YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS Most of the Hawera horses lor Wanganui raced at the Egmont meeting last week and they were let off with light tasks yesterday morning, writes “Goldspur” in the Hawera Star. Recent winds have dried up the tracks considerably and rain is badly needed as the going has become very hard. Veldette (Sexton) and Chief Lord (Ryan) were companions over half a mile on the trial grass in 51 1-5. In her two outings to date Veldette has had little chance to demonstrate her ability. She has been badly left on both occasions. She will not be produced at Wanganui unless the services of a strong lightweight rider can be obtained.

Raceaway (Reilly) sprinted two furlongs on the same track in 27. The Acre colt is making steady progress but will require plenty of time. Notium (Cole) was not out to make time when traversing six furlongs on the plough at a working gallop. He has freshened up nicely as the result of a short respite. Student Prince is back in work after a spell since the Taranaki Christmas meeting. He has thrown off his soreness. Disturbed (Toki) gave a safe display over five ‘schooling hurdles. Professional (Grindlay) again fenced very carefully in a similar bout on his own. He may do better with the colours up. A two-year-old filly by PosterityBurnish, owned by Mr. J. Lowe, studgroom at the Koatanui Stud, Wanganui, is the latest addition to O. Cox’s stable.

W. Grindlay is lo pilot Twilight Song in the highweight event at Woodville.

Lickem, Prime Quality, Dark Eagle, Le Marquis, Kilometre, Golden Orchid, Friesland, Algerian, Winsome Lu, Alyth and Lady Boden were apportioned steady pacework. Two of the yearlings purchased at the Trentham national sales by patrons of Hawera stables have been broken in and made their appearance on the tracks. They are the Beau Pere—Duck’s Egg filly in O. Cox’s stable and the Moorsotis—Rawene colt under the care of J. Brown.

In appearance, Ramleh looks little the worse fcr his bleeding ailment at Hawera last Thursday and as he had never previously shown any signs of bleeding it will be interesting to note whether the trouble recurs.
