JUVENILES AT WOODVILLE

BROTHER TO GAY SON In the Sapling Stakes, the race for two-year-olos at Woodville to-day, there are four juveniles who will be making their first appearance in pub-. They are Gayest Son, Lively Lady, Sanciful, and Myarion. Gayest Son is the full-brother to Gay Son, and, like his relative, he will race in the jacket of his breeder, Mr. A. F. Symes. Much interest will be taken in the first appearance of this colt.

Lively Lady’ is another of Mr. C. T. Keeble’s horses. She is a chestnut filly by Lackham, who has been such a good sire for this owner, and her dam is the Gainscourt—Bon Marche mare Courtesan, a full-sister to Red Rufus who never raced herself. This is the family that has produced such excellent performers for Mr. Keeble or his previous trainer, H. E. Russell, as Mala, Brown Betty, Beacon Fire, Gipsy Love, and others. Sanciful is one of Mr. T. A. Duncan’s team under the care of L. G. Morris. She is a brown filly by B oxbridge out of the Day Comet —Persis mare Fantastic, a half-sister to Lady Lois, Tuahine, Royal Duke, Nucleus (dam of Gay Circle), Persham, and others, and she is one of the wc horses to be raced by Mr. Duncan that have not been bred by him, as she was purchased privately after being passed in at the National Sales last year. The name may seem •fantastic,” and in a way it is, as it was telephoned Fanciful (which would not have been allowed) and was taken down erroneously as Sanciful, whicn has been permitted to stand. Myarion is a bay daughter of the Phalaris horse Myosotis, who has recently had his first winner in Moorsotis. Her dam is the Martarma— Lady Desmond mare Miss Martarma, a half-sister to the Wellington Steeplechase winner Diamond, and descending from the same line as Veilmond, Somke Screen, Rational, and others. She was bought at the National Sales lust year for 120 guineas by Mr. J. B. Bradley, of Feild-

It is of interest also to observe another juvenile in to-day’s field named Flying Flag. This filly has had some racing, but she did not come under particular notice till she ran Judgment to a neck in the Novice Stakes at Ashhurst on Anniversary Day, a good showing for a two-year-old against older horses. She is a brown daughter of Lord Warden and the Martian—Lady Kinloch mare Battle 1 Flag, a descendant of Rose of DenI mark through the same line as Epi is, Mowbray, and Waiwene. She is one of the fillies bought at last years sales bv Mr. A. F. M. Symes and leased out for racing, her lessee being Mi- H Blackmore, for whom she is being trained at Hastings by L. D. Berry, who also has Endorsement, also leased out by Mr. Symes. WINNERS AT HAWERA AIRAM AND VALERIAN (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, Feb. 16. ' Judging bv the manner in which (she won her race over the hurdles at ! Hawera last week Airam is going to hake high rank among the jumpers. 1 She gave a brilliant exhibition of jumping, and only at one fence did she falter, making a good recovery and scarcely losing any ground. She was started from behind the field, giv - ing away several lengths start, and then she led over the last half-mile. I This mare may win again : »nn, for she I should carry weight. The other Auckland winner at | Hawera last week was the two-year- : old Valerian. He had little difficulty I in defeating what turned out to be a I rather weak field. He began well and ; was never headed and it would seem I as if he goes best this way. for his i three wins to date have been from I barrier-rise. Valeri?.:: edd not have a i great deal to spare when he won his I last race and he did nor assist his I chief opponent. Judgment, by boring | over, but it is pleasing to see that he I has recovered his form.
