WOODVILLE CARD
Dungarvan Heads the Handicap INTERESTING FIELDS BRIEF REVIEW FOR TO-DAY Sandwiched in between the Egmont ana Wanganui autumn meetings, the Woodville District Jockey Cluos fixlure to-day and to-morrow is certain to attract a good deal of attention, and its prospects of success appear very bright. The fields engaged in the majority of the events are of handy dimensions, and the President’s Handicap in particular will appeal because of the class engaged. The single-pool totalisator will be operated at the meeting. The track is an excellent testing ground, with a long, wide straight that gives every horse in a large held a chance if ht is good enough.
Sixteen are engaged in the Maiden Plate, but few are good enough to be enthused over. Halley iinished second to Ruatiti at Woodville two months ago but is still a maiden. Richelieu Pearl has also run a good deal without luck. Prediction and Barabbas are two promising Trentham candidates, and another from the same quarter is Ruling Star, who carries Mr. G. F. Moore's colours. This Chief Ruler —Phrosa gelding is trained by T. R. George. Another Chief Ruler is Cherry Picker, a full brother to Cherry King. Awapuni stables are responsible for live of the held, but backers may prefer the chances of Halley, Preaiction and Cherry Picker. Judging by Pahiatua form in similar events. Dancing Flame and Mataiou would have good chances in tiie Oringi Highweight. Boatsong, the topweight, is also in the ten-furlong Kumeroa Hack Handicap, with iis weak Held. Bumble went good races at Hawera, and Linguist is a useful sort, but one cannot go past Dancing Flame and Mataroa. It is a very useful Held that will line up for the Woodville Handicap. It is headed by Dungarvan, whose Egmont Cup win marked his return Io form anil was capped by sharing the honours in lhe Tonks Stakes at Hawera last Saturday. Probably the
topweight will find Lady Furst, who was the other to share in the Tonk. Stakes dead-heat, his most dangerous opponent to-day. The Siegfried filly must be improved as a result of her two races at Hawera, and even ai 11b. the worse in the weights she must be hard to beat. Others with good chances appear to be Master Cyklon, Big Dook, Hunting Cat, Corroboree and Galteemore. One of the largest fields of the day will be the seventeen in the Sapling Stakes. Included there is the Gayest Son—Sunola —Flying Flag triplebracket and the Social Credit—Lively Lady bracket. The first-named is, of course, full-brother to Gay Son and he will be making his first appealance in public. V ascones, it will be remembered, was fancied a good deai in the Debutant Stakes last spring Portal tPombal—Solange> will carry Mr. G. M. Currie’s colours. Chevychase, full-sister to the brilliant Taurangi, will appeal, and probably she will be one ot the well-backed candidates. The field for the President’s Handicap. the hack seven furlongs, is moic useful than impressive, and probablv Joe Louis, Earl Colossus and the brilliant but disappointing White Gold will be preferred. Eight are carded for the open sprint, the Ruahine Handicap. Lucullus Lad has been racing very consistently, but Alunga and Mittie may hold the topweight save. Recent winners in Boatsong, Ohl Bill and Patches will make the position rather interesting in the Kumcroa Handicap, a hack event run over ten furlongs. Old Bill has the class and Boatsong has the form, so the public can have their choice. To conclude the day's racing there Is the County Handicap, with its field of thirteen to slip over six furlongs. Red Cat has been racing consistently, and the distance should suit her. Jeanne is preferred to Joe Louis, especially as the latter may elect lo take on thea earlier race. Thrasos jo useful. Mischel is improving and Golden Flame is smart. The field includes the bracketed Imogen ana Jacynth, but backers will not go past the division near the top of the list Advising the “Chronicle” last night of the latest scratchings, the secretary of the Woodville Jockey Club stated that the following scratchings had been made: —Sapling Stakes: Social Credit. County Handicap: Night Eruption. President’s Handicap: Hunting Mint. The following may be in request m their respective engagements to-day: Maiden Plate.—Halley, Prediction, Cherry Picker. It is reported from Woodville that The King is an unlikely starter in the Maiden Plate, as it is reported that the Siegfried filly has suffered injuries. Mataroa will carry the colours of Mr. A. H. Burt, Bulls, in the Oringi Highweight at Woodville to-day.
