MARTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.. MARTON, Feb. 15. The first meeting of the new year for the Marton District High School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, Dr. R. A. Church presiding over Messrs. T. C. Ward, C. M. Holdaway, H. Frederick, A. L. Williams, J. H. Dashwood and C. M. Thomas (sec.). The headmaster, Mr. A. \V. Tucker, was also in attendance. Correspondence was received from the board, granting the Wanganui District Methodist Young Women’s Bible Class Union the use of the school for an Easter camp. The St. John Ambulance (Marton Division) wrote, thanking the committee for permission to use the Assembly Hall for the annual inspection and forwarded a donation.—The meeting decided to refund the donation. Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster reported that Ihe school re-opened on Wednesday, February 1, with the addition of pupils formerly attending Upper Tutaenui and Woodlands Schools, making a total of 323 in the Primary Department, and 132 in the Secondary Department, both being higher than any preceding year. “Staff: Mr. M. C. Amadio and Mrs. R. H. Fromm have joined as permanent members of the staff. Miss M. Dales has joined as probationary assistant, and Miss J. McQueen as supernumerary assistant. “Sports: The inter-house athletic sports for both departments will be held on Wednesday afternoon. February 22, commencing at 1 o’clock on Marton Park. The inter-house swimming sports will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 24th." School Picnic. The matter of holding the school picnic was again brought up, there being a divergence of opinion as to whether it should be held or not, and it was finally decided, that as two members were away, to again ventilate the question at a special meeting to be held on Saturday. Four telephones are to be installed in the school for inter-communication purposes. It has been necessary to transfer one class to the Technical buildings in High Street, owing to lack of accommodation. Extra remuneration was accordingly granted the caretaker. Further accommodation for bicycles is to be provided when the new building is completed. The sundial kindly donated by the Tutaenui School Committee is to le erected in front of the school. Application is to be made for a desk in the headmaster’s office, the present furniture being considered inadequate. A cool frame is to be provided for the agricultural area for the purpose of raising seedlings. Racks are to be erected for storing rifles.
