NEW ARTILLERY AND MECHANICAL UNITS

The Chinese launched a great offensive on the Hunan front, throwing a quarter of a million troops, equipped with new artillery and mechanised units, against 40,000 Japanese, whom they attacked with bayonets, says the Hongkong correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. The Chinese inflicted heavy losses, and in addition to capturing hundreds of prisoners and much war material they, advanced several miles. A further message from Hongkong says that it is estimated that only 300,000 Japanese south of Manehukuo are facing 2,000,000 Chinese regulars and 1,000.000 more guerrilla troops inside their own lines. The reorganised Chinese air force also took the initiative for the first time, bombing and machine-gunning the Japanese
