WAITOTARA COUNCIL

YESTERDAY'S MEETING ENGINEERS REPORT The Waitotara County Council met yesterday, Cr. Wm. Morrison presiding. There were also present Councillors F. Handley, A. A. Winwood, L. T. Jones, H. Titter, T. Alexander, R. Laird, and G. Palmer. Waireka Road.—A letter was received drawing the council’s attention to the unsatisfactory state of the Waireka Road, from which the binding had almost disappeared, leaving the surface very rough with loose metal. —It was decided to have repairs effected early in March. Engineer’s Report The engineer reported as follows on the work carried out during the month of January:— Ragwort. —It is pleasing to report that the growth of ragwort on areas treated by county workmen has been checked. It is not possible to eradicate the. weed where it is growing in high scrub and gorse. Brunswick-Westmere Riding.—Tenders were received for the re-con-struction, metalling and sealing of the Rapanui highway. The Main Highways Board lias not authorised the acceptance of any tender. Metalling of Otakina Hill, Brunswick Road, by county workmen was commenced, about half of the original programme for metalling being finished. The work has been discontinued in the meantime as the trucks were required for work in the Waitotara Riding. Workmen are now re-erecting road fences alongside the re-constructed roadway. The Rapanui, SpringvaleFrancis, Heads-Mosstown, Blueskin and Wanganui River Highways, and the Brunswick- Virginia, Kai Iwi Val-

ley Roads and Clarkson Avenue were graded.

Waitotara Riding.—The contract for metalling portion of the Handley and Pukerimu Roads has been satisfactorily completed. A quarter of a mile of the Rangitatau East Road was reshaped and re-metalled with crushed shell rock. The widening at under slips on the Paparangi Hill, Rangitatau East-Watershed Highway has been commenced; a contract has been let for widening other portions of the highway. Mosston Riding.—The Heads-Moss-town Highway, Fitzherbert Avenue, Parsons Street and Fox Road were graded. Tokomaru Riding.—Metalling of the Ahu Ahu Road has been re-started, j and the work has been finished as far: as the Mill Road. A tender was ac-i cepted for metalling three portions of j the Nauarapaoa Road and the work] has been eommenced.
