“TOTE” AT HAWERA
J SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE EGMONT CLUB’S FIGURES I The experience o£ the Egmont RacI ing Club at the summer meeting lajl Thursday and Saturday suggests that racing in Hawera has regained most of its former prestige. The totalisator turnover of £42,465 handled last week represents the club's largest turnover since 1920 ana is almost back to the 1927-26 level. This total may easily have exceeded the above figures but for three four-horse fields on Saturday. During the depression years the 1 club experienced a very lean period. The sum handled in 1929, £44,Sal 10s, decreased to £11,698 in 1932 and suffered a further drop to £9251 10s in 1933. Steady Upward Trend. In 1934 a gradual improvement was wrought when £19,558 was handled but recovery was not lasi as the investments had risen only io £25,595 111 1936. A large increase to £37,350 followed in I‘Jot, but incle--1 ment weather, together with the effect of a cnange in the betting method to single pool, saw it drop to : £32,288 last year. The win-and- ! place system of betting was reintroLuced at last week's fixture. However, the figures are still well below the peak period of 1924, when - the sum of £60,437 was handled during the two days. Record of Investments.
