ROYAL CHIEF S WIN
HAZLETT GOLD CUP DEMONSTRATION BY SECTION OF CROWD There was a line finish to the James Hazlett Gold Cup at the Dunedin meeting on Saturday, with Royal Chief outstanying Queen of Song over the last *5O yards. Except for Atua Rere the other four were in close order inside the last furlong, when Top Row was doing best. Then Queen of Song obtained a lucky opening on the rails and was hailed for a moment as the winner, but Royai Chief finished on too well for her. During the presentation of the Gold Cup there was a noisy demonstration from a section of the crowd and the disturbance was continued for some ten minutes. One individual stood at the birdcage rails and abused the stewards’ gallery for some time. Moorsotis, who had failed to come on when he entered the straight in a good position in the Champagne Stakes on Thursday, made no race of the Hopeful Handicap over the last half-furlong. His form was a distinct improvement, and he succeeded in knocking a fifth of a second off the track record previously held jointly by Alma (1934) and Epic (1936*. Night Pal was always second. Aranui finished on solidly in front of Master Hotspur, who ran a disappointing race.
