OHINGAITI annual FIXTURE
SPORTS AND STEER-RIDING HIGHLAND DANCING EVENTS (Ow n Correspondent). OHINGAITI, Feb. 13. The 21st. annual fixture of the above club, held on the property of Chas. Mclntyre, Esq., proved one of the most successful in the history of the club. The success for which is mainly due to the capability and efficiency of the club’s officials in organising and controlling the various events and to the fact that the day was fine, this being in great contrast to the previous four years’ meetings, when inclement weather tended to mar the day's entertainment. Approximately a thousand spectators gathered to witness the varied programme of cycling, running, axemen’s, horse and Highland dancing events and last but not least the ever popular steer riding. The Hunterville Pipe Band was in attendance, also Borham’s public address system, which was of great assistance to the officials and the general public. The club’s secretary, Mr. F. Fulton, reported excellent entries in all events and keen competition was a factor of the day. The thanks of the club arc due to those members who assisted to make the day a success and to the officials who acted as judges. One incident that was regretted by ■JI present was that of the fall of Mr. Allen Bull’s horse Creamy (aged 24 years), which was killed instantly when it fell and sustained a broken neck whilst competing in the open pony jump. The rider. Master Mac Bull, fortunately received no injury. The steer riding, a major attraction of t uay. proven as thrilling and exciting as in the past and resulted in a tie for first place, Messrs. R. Osborne (Ohingaiti) and H. M. Blunden (Halcombe) being the successful riders, with Henery (Taihape) third. The winning riders each re-rode to decide the issue, but the judge, Mr. J. J. Waller, declared each rider equal. The sheep guessing competition was won by Mr. Frank Russell (Ohingaiti), w hose guess of 1391 b. was the correct weight. Messrs. L. Henderson, J. R. Ellery and Edwards tied for second place and in the draw, J. R. Ellery was successful, thereby winning “Wonder Mineral Lick” and trough, valued at £2 10s, donated to the club by the Wonder Mineral Lick Co., whose representative. Mr. Granville Smith, and his three daughters, by their assistance, greatly increased the popularity of the competition. The clubis annual dance was held in lhe evening and the Memorial Hall was thronged with dancers. Music was supplied by the “H. and P.” orchestra (Kimbolton).
