LAWN TENNIS TEAM BEATS OPUNAKE (Own Correspondent) PATEA, Feb. 13. Patea defeated Opunake by 4 sets on Saturday on the local courts in a B grade match, resulting as follows: 1 Ladies’ Singles.—Miss E. Whitehead lost to Miss G. Geary, 3-7; Mrs. Boswell lost to Miss M. Humphries, 4-7: Miss E. Cousins beat Mrs. Humphries, 7-3; Miss A. Loftus lost to Miss K. Blackman, 6-8. Ladies’ Doubles.—Miss E. Whitehead and Mrs. Boswell lost to Misses Geary and Humphries, 2-9; Misses Loftus and Cousins beat Mrs. Humphries and Miss Blackman, 9-5. Men’s Singles.—S. Cousins beat L. Heardman, 9-3; H. A. Boswell lost to , G. Mclvor, 6-9; E. Cousins beat T. B. Fouhy, 9-1; R. Burgess beat D. Watt . 12-10. Men’s Doubles.—S. and E. Cousins ! beat Herdman and Fouhy. 9-2; Bos- i well and Burgess beat Watt and Me- j Ivor, 11-9. Combined Doubles.—Miss Whitehead and S. Cousins beat Miss Geary and Herdman. 12-10; Mr. and Mrs. 1 H. A. RU LE SHOOTING Sixteen riflemen competed in a practice shoot over 300 yards on Saturday. Owing to the increased number of young members who are putting up fine performances, an endeavour is being made to erect another target before next Saturday. Young competitors are requested to be on the range as early as possible to receive coaching from the more experienced riflemen. D. Roots and Graham, with 48, topped the scores, J. Huston being next with 47. SURF AND LIFE SAVING The Palea team, E. Oakley, H. Verney, C. Haining, J. Pepperill, R. Sopp. and R. Adams, won the Taba Shield for the six-man event in the Taranaki surf and life-saving championships held at Opunake on Sunday. The Ohawe team won the Grey Shield for the march-past and the Ballin Cup for the four-man surf relay race. SWIMMING Entries were fewer than usual for the Seaside Improvement Society’s Cup. held at the beach on Saturday. Geoffrey Honeyfield (Patea School) was the winner of the cup. Results were: 25yds., Geof. Honeyfield (Patea) 1, Owen Cooper (Patea) 2. Tessa Cunningham (Patea Convent) 3. 50yds.: Geof. Honeyfield 1, Owen Cooper 2, Tessa Cunningham 3. 75yds.: Geof. Honey field 1, O. Cooper Rev. Father Rohan, president of the Schools’ A.A. Association, thanked the representatives of the Surf Club and Seaside Society for their interest in the welfare of the school children. Mr. H. Boagey, secretary of the society, then presented the cup, with congratulations. PADDLING AND SWIMMING POOL Mr. F. Parsons and Captain Barnes represented the Patea Harbour Board at a meeting of those interested in the formation of a paddling and swimming pool last week, and after an inspection of the site the former assured the committee of the support of the Harbour Board, which realised that the committee and Seaside Society were doing very good work for the town and district. The work already done added greatly to the attractiveness of the beach. The site approved, Mr. Peacocke was authorised to arrange for the necessary excavation work to he proceeded with. Mr. Peacocke stated that the site had been chosen with a view to a icrger bath being constructed close by at a future date should such be desired. Further subscriptions received are: D. Roots, £1 Is; G. Williams, £1 Is; L. W. Austin. £1 Is: F. Ramsbottom, £1 per month for three months to help onward construction work.
