EARLY SESSION
OPPOSITION REQUEST A FINANCIAL CRISIS MR. SAVAGE REFUSES WELLINGTON, Feb. 10. . Consequent upon a resolution passed lat the caucus of Opposition members 'yesterday, the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) last night wrote to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) asking that Parliament be called together immediately so that consideration might be given to the present financial and economic situation. To-day, Mr. Savage replied to Mr. Hamilton, declining the request on the ground that circumstances do not at present warrant the summoning of Parliament. The text of Mr. Savage's reply to Mr. Hamilton is as follows: — Dear Mr. Hamilton, I am in receipt of your letter of the 9th. instant, i copy of which appeared in the morning Press before it reached me. I think I should say, right away, that unless special circumstances should warrant it, which is certainly not the case at present, there is no intention of calling Parliament together before the usual time. The matters referred to in the second paragraph of your letter are being fully covered by the Government's activities; while the suggestion made in ? th— third paragraph is too indefinite 1 and ridiculous to justify serious attention. ' Finally, you may accept my assurance that there is no drift, but a Do1 minion-q ide attempt to build on modern lines. With best wishes, Yours faithfully, M. J. SAVAGE.
