WATER SUPPLY

OKEHU SYSTEM INSPECTION OF CATCHMENT AREA TO-MORROW STOCK MAY BE REMOVED An inspection of the catchment area at the Wanganui City Council’s waterworks at Okehu will be made to-morrow by Mr. W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui, members of the city council and Dr. D. Cook, Medical Officer of Health. The party will leave Wanganui at 9a.m. and will spend the day at the reservoir in order to make a thorough examination.

The catchment area was the subject of a special report by Dr. Cook which was considered at Tuesday’s council meeting. The report was nor. handed to the Press for publication, although such action was sought oy several councillors, but statements made during the course of the debate made it clear that the report of Dr. Cook was made as a result of stock being allowed to graze in a portion of the catchment area.

In his report Dr. Cook urged that the practice of grazing stock in a portion of the catchment area should be stopped immediately because of the danger of the water becoming polluted by the stock.

The council has issued an invitation to representatives of the press to accompany the party.

It is understood that the rental received by the council for the grazing area is half a crown a year.
