Poll of Ratepayers. A poll of ratepayers in the Rangitikei county will be taken on Wednesday, February 22, on a proposal to raise a loan of £ll,OOO for the reconstruction of bridges throughout the county. The polling hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Garrison Band Concert.
A promenade concert will be presented by the Wanganui Garrison Band in the Queen’s Park rotunda, which recently had lighting reinstalled, at 8.15 to-morrow night. In addition to all the music for the New Zealand championship contest at Christchurch next month, the band will play an entirely new humoresque selection. Kennel Club Successes. Members of the Wanganui Kennel Club were successful in a num- ; ber of classes at the Dannevirkc Show this week. Mrs. H. Watson’s [Pekingese San No Fee won two firsts, cash special cup, best Pekingese and Pekin Cup for best New Zealandbred bitch; and Ada Lun of Guyton secured a first and a second. Mi. and Mrs. D. O'Connor's Cocker i Spaniel secured a first and a second.
Swimming Interest. Keen interest is being displayed in the concluding series of events in the Wanganui district swimming championships, to be held in the Wanganui East baths thi sevening. Next week carnivals will be held by the Wanganui Central Swimming Club and the Wavcrley Swimming Club, on Wednesday and Saturday respectively. The following week there will be a carnival at Marton on Wednesday, February 22.
Level Crossing Closed. After having been used for a period of 50 years, the Cook Street level crossing over the railway tracks at West End, Palmerston North, has been closed’ for vehicular traffic as from Monday, February 6. Pedestrians and cyclists, however, will be permitted to use the crossing as heretofore. The closure was decided upon by the Railways Department with the approval of the Palmerston North City Council.
High Nursing Standard. There was only one part of the conference discussions that caused him distress, said Dr. R. A. Shore, acting-Director-General of Health, when addressing the New Zealand Hospital Boards’ Association conference at New Plymouth. It was a statement of a delegate that the standard of nursing was lower than formerly. That was- not so. He could say without fear of contradiction that the standard of nursing in New Zealand was as high as it ever was.
Physical Fitness Week. “I am afraid that there is little the country can do, as Fordell and Makirikiri are the only closely populated centres we have,” said the chairman, Mr. A. 11. Collins, at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui County Council when a circular dealing with National Fitness Week was received from the New Zealand Counties’ Association. Mr. Collins added that the council had already decided to co-operate with the Wanganui City Council regarding the celebration of the week.
Car-Trailer Accident. Two children, Edward and Louis Frost, aged 4-> and IB years respectively, of Kaitoke, were admitted to the Wanganui Public Hospital yesterday, suffering from injuries received when they were struck by .a motorcar trailer on the Main South Road. The car was passing the children near Kaitoke. the youngest of which was being wheeled in a pram, when the trailer became unhinged and struck the pram, hurling the children to the ground. Their condition was reported last night to be satisfactory. Regatta Crews Depart.
The crews to represent the three Wanganui rowing clubs at the New Zealand championship regatta at Picton to-day left Wanganui yesterday afternoon by motor-lorry. The Union Boat Club's eight, the present holders of the eight-oar championship, travelled to Picton after the Wellington regatta last week in order to carry out a week’s training on Picton Harbour. When the championship regatta was held at Wanganui last year the Union Club won the eights .championship, the Wanganui Club tne pairs championship, Clifton the senior fours and Aramoho the Wanganui Plate. Australian Tourists. A party of tourists from the new 24,000-ton P. and O. liner Stratheden, which arrived at Auckland yesterday, will pay a brief visit to Wanganui during the week-end. The tourists will arrive in Wanganui about 6 p.m. to-morrow, after a tour of the North Island scenic resorts, and will leave for Wellington early on Monday morning. The Stratheden, which is paying its first visit to New Zealand, brought 843 Australian tourists, and is the seventh cruise ship of the season. The vessel will leave Auckland for Wellington tonight and sails for Sydney on Monday. Military Camp. A preliminary course for officers and non-commissioned officers of the Second Composite Battalion commences at Waiouru to-day and on Saturday next the main camp will open for a period of a week. L-c-utenant-Colonel F. S. Varnham, of New Plymouth, will be O.C. of the camp and Captain J. W. Barry, N.Z.S.C., of Wanganui, will be adjutant. The units comprising the Second Composite Battalion are the Wellington West Coast Regiment from Wanganui, the Taranaki Regiment with headquarters at New Plymouth and the Hawke’s Bay Regiment with headquarters at Hastings. Civic Procedure. Several amendments to the code of civil procedure of the Supreme Court were embodied in the Gazette issued on Thursday night. One of the main objects is to secure better provision for third-party procedure, so as to secure as far as possible that all related questions should be disposed of in one action. The new rules also make provision for complying with undertakings given in a number ot conventions made with other countries for cases where documents are required to be served or evidence taken in one country for use in relation to proceedings in another country. The third matter provided for is the exemption of £5O worth of furniture from seizure to satisfy Supreme Court judgments.
