PENALTY ON RATES
TO START NEXT WEEK On Friday next, February 17, ratepayers whose rates are unpaid will have a final opportunity of effecting a settlement and thus escaping the statutory imposition of 10 per cent. The formal and legal demand for the rates covering the financial year ending on March 31 next, was made on August 3 last. A period of six months and fourteen days must elapse from the date of demand before the local authoritycan enforce the penalty, but having done so the additional amounts are debited in the rate books and must be collected. Payment of the current years rates effected to date compare most favourably with those of last year, and ratepayers with rates outstanding should note that only a few days remain in which to discharge their obligations to the City Council.
